Swords

  • Length: Overall - 38.5", Blade - 28", Handle - 6.75" This is an Intermediate-level sword, appropriate for younger or less experienced swordspeople. The archer’s primary weapon was the bow and arrow, but what did an archer turn to when the enemy closed and tried to engage the archer in melee combat? In such a situation, the archer typically favored a short sword, just like this one, something lighter than a full-sized blade, but effective against a more heavily armed and armored foe.

  • The long sword bokken is the traditional training sword of the Samurai.  There are literally hundreds of Japanese wooden weapons arising from different martial arts schools.  All have subtle variations.  Hickory Arms bokken are based on the versatile Aikiken bokken, which has elements of both old and modern versions .  The Aikido bokken is characterized by its speed and durability for practice with training partners. Hickory Arms' is proud to offer bokken made from hickory: a  strong, dense, shock resistant and beautiful wood. The long sword has an overall length of  39.75", 42", or 48", but can also be made a custom length. The training bokken are tsuba ready and are available with beautiful hardwood trim or waxed cotton cord for a more ergonomic fit and impact absorption.      
  • The short sword bokken, also referred to as wazikashi or shoto, is the complementary sword to the long sword.  It is used in the less dominant hand. Hickory Arms' is proud to offer bokken made from hickory: a  strong, dense, shock resistant and beautiful wood. The short sword has an overall length of  32" or 34.5", but can also be made a custom length.  The standard handle is 10.25" The training bokken are tsuba ready and are available with beautiful hardwood trim or waxed cotton cord for a more ergonomic fit and impact absorption.      
  • Length: Overall 36”, Blade 29”, Handle 6” The Celtic sword symbolized power, strength, honor and the ultimate glory in battle. The Celtic sword is a short yet graceful weapon with the classic anthropomorphic hilt. It is an exceptional thrusting weapon which had famed the Celts for their ferociousness and tenacity in battle. Recommended for form training only.  
  • Our Chinese broadsword is made of hickory with a round hickory guard, 28" blade, overall 34", 6" hilt.    Hilt can be  wrapped as in the  picture displayed.  The sword is broad headed, short handled with a gently swooping curved broad blade.
  • The Claymore Sword better known as the great sword of the Highlands, was used in the constant clan warfare and border fights with the English from 1500 to 1650 and was still in use as late as the Rebellion of 1745, the two-handed Claymore Sword seems to be an offshoot of earlier broadswords as they were developed into great swords. Widely feared because its lightness made it faster in combat than European counterparts, the Claymore Sword developed a distinctive style of cross guard with down-sloping arms that ended in spatulate swellings.
  • The Shaska in appearance is midway between a full sabre and a straight sword.  This sabre was preferred by Russian calvary, Cossacks, and later became the official weapon for Russian troops and police.  It has a slightly curved blade  and can be effective for both slashing and thrusting.  There is no guard, but a large curved pommel.  Overall length is 36" with a 29" blade.

  • Daab

    The Daab is a sword used in Krabi Krabong, a Thai weapon-based martial art. What is interesting about the Daab is its long handle that is used as a counter weight to the blade making it decently balanced and able to be used as sword and club. The sword was intentionally designed this way, and the user wields one in each hand.
  • Dussak

    Length: Overall 26”, Blade 20”, Handle 6” Czech tusk (Dussack) – specific weapon for Czech very common for farmers, artisans, etc.  Originates from the Husitian wars in Czech in the first half of the 15th century.  Later the style evolved into a wooden version used for training. Pictured is a Dussak with black walnut trim on the handle, optional.
  • Length: Overall 22”, Blade 15”, Handle 8” Legolas' Elven fighting knives are used when he is in very close quarters or when he runs out of arrows. Legolas wields his knives with one in each hand and executes his attacks with deadly quick precision.
  • This custom request Falchion is a beautiful combination of Elven styling with an S-Guard detailing. The Falchion sword design is reminiscent of European Falchions, one handed and single edged slashing swords, made in the 13th through 16th century that resembled the modern machete.   Blade Length: 30 in  Overall Length: 40 in  Blade Width: 2.25 in  
  • You're in Middle Earth being hunted by Urakai.  What weapon must you have?  An elven dagger, of course; Aragorn's dagger carries a lot of power for disabling the enemy up close.  Overall length is 20 inches.
  • The Lhang is the elven version of the great sword, wielded in two hands it's devastatingly dangerous. The curved, one-edged blade has lots of energy. It has a big handle that the Elf can hold with both his two hands.  Overall length is 50” Pictured is the Lhang with Mahogany trim.  
  • The Elven Short sword is used by elf rangers and scouts to keep themselves safe in the woods and wilds.
  • The Elven blade Hadhafang cosmetically resembles the katana, but the ”throng-cleaver” was actually inspired by European calvary sabers of the early modern period.
  • Falcata

    Length: Overall 26”, Blade 20”, Handle 6” The weapon features a forward curving blade that puts more weight and mass near the tip of the sword, which allows this weapon to deliver devastating blows that cleave cleanly through all but the strongest of materials.  It is believed to have been used by the Celts against the Romans and was so impressive the Romans were forced to reinforce their shields and redesign their armor  and weapons.

  • Length: Overall  52", Blade  38", Handle  10" Great swords are infantry swords which cannot be used comfortably in a single-hand.  For the most part, they were scaled-up versions of the longsword.  Great swords were capable of facing heavier weapons such as pole-arms and larger axes, and were devastating against light armour.

  • Length: Overall 36”, Blade 29”, Handle 6” The German Gross Messer had a reputation for being a huge and imposing battle ready sword.  Gross Messers (German for “Great Knife”) are a Renaissance creation originating around the 15th century.  With the need of swords serving both military and civilian life, the messer became a utility tool for daily activity, hunting, self-protection and war.
  • Length: Overall 23”, Blade 15.5”, Handle 4.5” This is an Intermedial-level sword, appropriate for younger or less experienced swordspeople. The sword Sting has a long history of serving the smaller folk, having been used by no less than three hobbits during the course of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.  Its elvish name translates, “I am the spider’s bane”, which earns it a place at your side whenever you go into battle.
  • 42” Hickory Heavy Bokken Handle 11” length by 4-3/4” circumference Blade 30” length by 4-1/4” circumference The hickory wood for each piece is carefully chosen for strength, grain, and beauty. The bokken are made from 4/4 (1 inch thick) Hickory. Each is carefully finished with gel polyurethane and then hand-tested to ensure ruggedness, correct weight, and proper balance. The bokken can be used as training tools in martial-arts and will easily hold up to the stresses of strenuous drills and exercises or contact practice.  Hickory Arms uses polyurethane as a finish because it provides a durable finish that is easy to maintain.  Hickory is well suited for the rigors of full contact. It is strong, tough, and somewhat flexible allowing it to bend when struck rather than splinter.  Hickory wood is specifically chosen for strength of grain.   • In a galaxy far, far away, the lightsaber is the "formal weapon of a Jedi Knight". Our lightsaber bokken can be used for full contact training without the worry of accidentally slicing off your opponent's arm. The blade length is 32" and the handle length can be customized: 10", 12", 14" or 16". NOTE:  After numerous Jedi academies have tested their lightsaber bokkens out, Hickory Arms will ascribe to the third design down with flat "buttons".  The trim pieces will only be in Hickory for added durability. We also offer a youth version of the Lightsaber Bokken here. The lightsaber crystals were used to indicate a Jedi's chosen class. Blue indicated a Jedi Guardian, a Jedi who used the Force on a more physical level. Green indicated a Jedi Consular, a Jedi who preferred to reflect on the mysteries of the Force and fight the dark side at its heart. Yellow indicated a Jedi Sentinel, a Jedi who honed their skills in a balance of combat and scholarly pursuits.   • Medieval longswords are the classic hand and a half sword or war sword of the 14th and 15th centuries. The hand and a half sword was typically straight, double-edged, with a simple cruciform hilt. It grew naturally out of the older, single-handed sword, as a means of combating heavier chain mail, and reinforced chain mail armour. Overall length of the longsword is 47", blade length is 35" and handle is 8".
  • Nagamaki

    The nagamaki is designed for large sweeping and slicing strokes.  Traditionally the Japanese nagamaki was used as an infantry weapon, frequently used against cavalry. The blade was single-edged. Overall length is 53” with a blade 29” and 24” handle.
  • Length: Overall 40”, Blade 31”, Handle 5” A sword with a broad blade and usually two lethal cutting edges. The Broadsword was used to cut rather than stab. The Normans (also called Northmen or Norsemen) were the descendants of the Scandinavian Vikings who raided the European coastal settlements at the outset of the 8th century. Despite the Norman's conversion to Christianity and their adoption of Frankish way of life, the Normans retained many of the traits of their Germanic ancestors.

  • Length: Overall 32”, Blade 24.75”, Handle 7.25” Simple yet efficient, the Urukhai sword was designed to take advantage of the wielders brute strength and ferocity.   The sword was more of a cleaver than a sword and the wicked spike on the back of the blade was perfect for hooking opponents.
  • Length: Overall 38.5”, Blade 30”, Handle 8” It is ironic that Thorin Oakenshield’s famous sword was not forged by dwarves at all, but by elves of the First Age, and was originally made for the warriors of Gondolin.  It was called Orcrist, or Orc-cleaver, and though it had fallen into obscurity by the time Thorin found it, the fear it could strike into the hearts of goblins had not waned with age.  They named it Biter, and hated its new owner all the more for bringing it back to the light.

  • Rapier

    Musketeer Rapier, 46" overall, 37.5" blade, with wood guard and round leather guard below guard. You can order the rapier with or without leather basket and hand and a half (pictured) or single handed handle. Because it allowed for fast reactions and had a long reach, the rapier was well-suited to civilian combat during the 16th and 17th Centuries.  Rapiers were common among bodyguards like the elite French Royal Guards or Swiss Papal Guards, especially since they needed a weapon that could be used indoors or in crowded areas.
  • Length: Overall 35” Blade 27 ¾” Handle 6” This weapon was a type of sword most commonly associated with the Saracens in the Holy Land who fought against the Crusaders.  The Scimitar was used for slicing attacks and often used from horseback..  Scimitars had a distinct curved blade ending with a sharp point.
  • Length: Overall 27”, Blade 19”, Handle 8” The Sica Gladiator sword is designed to intimidate and bludgeon the opponent’s fearlessness.  Adorned with a curved pointed blade, the Gladiator sword is not only an extremely powerful cutter, but a deadly slasher. The Gladius comes with a wrapped handle.  Please choose unwrapped handle and your color choice for the wrap as there is not a charge to wrap the handle.
  • A Singlestick is the sporting version of the Backsword.  Also known as a cudgel, our Singlestick is a .75" hickory round stick 36" long with a handcrafted, wax-hardened leather guard.
  • Our sparring dagger or parrying dagger is a category of small handheld weapons from the European late Middle Ages and early Renaissance. These weapons were used as off-hand weapons in conjunction with a single-handed sword. As the name implies they were designed to parry, or defend, more effectively than a simple dagger form, typically incorporating a wider guard, and often some other defensive features to better protect the hand as well.
  • Spartan

    Length: Overall 30”, Blade 23”, Handle 7” The tale of “Leonidas and his brave 300” has inspired many works of fiction.  The battle ready swords used by the Spartans in the film are not historically based with its short and single edged blade.   However, the design manages to convey "Spartan" ideals synonymous for anyone rigorously self-disciplined or courageous in the face of pain, danger, or adversity.  Recommended for form training only.  
  • Length: Overall 32”, Handle 5”, 1.6" wide blade The spatha was similar to the gladius in many ways. It was double-edged, with a short handle and a tapered point. However, it was longer, roughly 30-40 inches long.  The spatha was inspired by the long swords of Celts in Germany and Britain.  The longer reach of the gladius style sword was favored by the calvary.  
  • Length: Overall 33.5”, Blade 25.5”, Handle 4” This is an Intermedial-level sword, appropriate for younger or less experienced swordspeople. Initially, squires were a knight’s trainees/apprentices.   A knight typically took his squire into battle and gave him a chance to prove himself. If he proved his loyalty and skill in battle, he would have a “dubbing”, an official ceremony that made him a knight.  Great for a first sword, the squire sword helps to improve arm strength and technique.
  • Length: Overall 35”, Blade 27”, Handle 4.5” Swords in the Viking age were typically double edged; both edges of the blade were sharp. Swords were generally used single handed, since the other hand was busy holding the shield.

  • Zweihander

    The Zweihander (two-handed) sword is not for the faint of heart...called the Great Landsknecht Swords, they were wielded by only the strongest and most fearless chosen front line Swiss and German soldiers of the Middle Ages. Its main purpose was to down charging horsemen and cut off oncoming pike heads.    Dimensions are overall 55", blade length is 39.5", handle 13", and the guard is 10" wide!  The parrying hooks are keyed for added ruggedness.  See below for Goliath Zweihander orders!
